Six Days
A film about a man who seeks wealth and status to the detriment of those around him in 1929 New York.
I came up with the idea for this film in 2009 as a way to comment upon the recession that was happening then. As a way to tell this story but "tell it slant" (to borrow a phrase from Emily Dickinson), I chose to set it in 1929.
Six Days was influenced by one of Jesus's parables found in Luke 12:13-21 often called "The Parable of the Rich Fool," the writings of F. Scott Fitzgerald, "Citizen Kane" by Orson Wells, and the films of Billy Wilder, especially "Sunset Boulevard."
It took me about a year to make the film into a reality. The filming took place in Edinburgh, Scotland where I was living during some of 2009 & 2010. I had a lot of help from my church through people volunteering to act and to help from a technical aspect, and the church allowed me to use its camera equipment and facilities to do the shooting. The music was written and performed by a friend from grad-school, Bryn Stephenson, who was living in Vancouver, Canada at the time. I sent him some ideas of what I thought the music should sound like, and he came up with this beautiful score. The narrarator was also a friend from grad-school, James Simpson, who was living in London at the time. The film was truly an international effort, and there is no way I could have done it without so many talented people giving me their best.
The film was created as part of my "Integrative Project In Art & Theology" at Regent College in Vancouver.
